Do I need a smartphone to use SafeUT?
If you don’t have a smartphone or smart device or can’t access it, you can always start a chat or submit a tip to SafeUT on our website. Start a chat now, submit a tip now, or click the “Get Help Now” button at the top of this page when you’re ready to connect with a SafeUT counselor.
What do people talk to SafeUT counselors about?
SafeUT counselors are here to help you with any worries, stress, or safety concerns you may have—big or small. People reach out to us for things like feeling overwhelmed, lonely, bullied, worried about a friend, or worried about school safety.
Thoughts of suicide or self-harm often start as smaller feelings that build over time, such as feeling lonely, isolated, or a burden to people. No one should have to go through that alone. SafeUT counselors are available—for free 24/7, every day of the year—to support you and help things get better instead of worse.

Who’s responding to my messages on SafeUT?
SafeUT counselors are licensed with master’s degrees in mental health and employed by the Huntsman Mental Health Institute at University of Utah Health. They’re trained in supportive listening, collaborating to solve problems, intervening in crises, and preventing suicide and school safety threats.

Is my SafeUT conversation confidential?
User privacy is one of SafeUT’s top priorities. All SafeUT users’ information is kept private and secure. You do not need to share your name or any personal information to start a chat or submit a tip on SafeUT.
When you start a chat or submit a tip, we first ask you to select your school from our list of participating schools. This helps SafeUT counselors know who to contact if there are safety concerns that require us to act.
SafeUT, SafeUT Frontline, and SafeUT National Guard apps all have passwords to protect your privacy.

No. Your conversations on SafeUT, SafeUT Frontline, and SafeUT National Guard are confidential. We will never share or sell your information to outside parties. If SafeUT counselors are concerned about your safety or others’, we may take action by contacting relevant authorities, such as your school or emergency services.
SafeUT counselors work with each child to navigate tough situations, empowering them to share their thoughts and feelings with their parents or a trusted adult. By working together, we can help make sure your child feels understood and supported.
Your app on your personal device is password protected to provide additional privacy. Since the web version of SafeUT may be used on a public computer, it doesn’t have a password and instead resets every time a new chat or tip is started so that people can’t see what the last person discussed.

When you submit a tip, a SafeUT counselor reviews the information. If more information is needed after you submit a tip, a SafeUT counselor may send you a message on SafeUT before passing the tip to the school.
Schools use the information SafeUT provides and may follow up with the tip if there’s a safety concern. For high-risk situations, police may need to get involved to keep schools safe.
The tip feature is not available on SafeUT Frontline and SafeUT National Guard.
Is SafeUT available in different languages?
The SafeUT, SafeUT Frontline, and SafeUT National Guard apps for smartphones and smart devices are available in English and Spanish. Communicating with a SafeUT counselor in languages other than English depends on SafeUT counselor availability.
If you need to speak with a mental health professional in a language other than English, you can use the SafeUT, SafeUT Frontline, and SafeUT National Guard apps’ “Start a Call” feature and request a translator.

Why don’t I see my school listed on SafeUT?
Schools join the SafeUT program to improve safety and support for students. Once school leaders are trained to use the SafeUT platform, their school will be listed as a participant, and they can receive safety tips that are submitted about their school. If your school isn’t listed on SafeUT, students or parents can encourage their school to partner with us by emailing SafeUT@hsc.utah.edu.

School administrators have a lot on their plates. Schools that partner with SafeUT offer their students, parents and guardians, and staff a safe line to share their concerns 24/7, every day of the year for free.
